Stories of Whately

This site is a compilation of interviews conducted with five Whately residents in the fall of 2018. The clips presented here include stories about growing up in Whately and reflections on how the town has changed in the last 80 years. These stories illuminate the experiences of being a kid in Whately in a time both very different and remarkably similar to today. The project invites you to reflect on your own relationship to the places you have lived throughout your life.

The Storytellers

• Fay Bardwell: Born in 1925, Fay grew up on Haydenville Road and now lives on Chestnut Plain Road.
• Sylvia Nye: Born in 1934, Sylvia grew up on North Street and now lives next door to where she was born.
• Virginia Allis: Born in 1934, Virginia grew up in Willimansett and on State Road in Whately and now lives on Haydenville Road.
• Kit Fleuriel: Born in 1936, Kit grew up on Chestnut Plain Road and now lives a few miles down the road from where she was born.
• Adelia Bardwell: Born in 1937, Adelia grew up on what is now Haydenville Road and now lives on Conway Road.
